ECG Productions continues filming the documentary “Taiko – the Music of the Strong”. Besides the history of Taiko itself, this project also acknowledges the sad circumstances surrounding the internment camps for Japanese immigrants in Canada during World War II. Last week we filmed an interview with one of the leading experts in this field Masumi Izumi who is a Professor at the Department of Global and Regional Studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan.  These days, the Professor teaches Cultural Expressions of Japanese Canadians in Post-Internment Canada at the University of Victoria, British Columbia. Not so long ago, Masumi published her new book “Japanese Canadian Movement: Unknown history of Japanese people’s cross-border life” where she reveals the history of immigration from Japan to Canada. We are very grateful to Professor Masumi Izumi for taking the time to give us an interesting and detailed account of the events that happened during the Japanese Canadian internment and the breathtaking stories of the struggle and bravery. At the end of last year, one of the ECG Productions projects “On the Waves of Ukrainian Music” won two awards at once at the prestigious Ukrainian festival ONYKO Films Awards. The documentary received awards in two categories: The Best Documentary and The Best Costumes. Film director Olena Tumanska talked to the Festival representative about what inspired her to make this documentary and also shared her creative plans. ECG Productions is finishing filming a documentary about the tour of the outstanding opera singer Fyodor Chaliapin (1873-1938) in Canada. Chaliapin visited our country 8 times in total! The first time he performed in Canada in 1921 and his last performance in Canada happened in 1935. The great artist performed in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec and Winnipeg. Our team managed to find the traces and evidence of the artist’s presence in North America. We worked in the archives of Toronto, Moscow and St. Petersburg, met with collectors, experts and musicologists. The documentary is currently undergoing a post-production stage and we plan to have it released in Spring 2023.

Last week, a special guest came to the ECG Productions studio – a well-known musician, singer and composer Donne Roberts from Toronto. He took part in the filming of the kid’s puppet show “Mama Canada” Season two. This episode will be devoted to music and notes. Donne Roberts has twice won Juno Awards – this is one of the most prestigious music awards in Canada. Donne has also been nominated for this award four times. So it was not difficult for him to explain to our younger audience what notes are and how new tunes are created. Specially for the Mama Canada series Donne performed his famous song “My Friend Malembo” and we were enjoying watching how all our characters including Professor and even strict Aunt Peggy could not resist dancing to this cheerful song!

Did you know that Thanksgiving Day is celebrated only in two countries – the United States and Canada? This holiday appeared thanks to the first English settlers, who moored on November 21, 1620 on the Mayflower ship to the shores of the North America. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated with relatives and closest friends. The holiday dinner usually consists of baked turkey in cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. The celebration has its own traditional drink – apple cider. But you can also surprise your guests with some exotic dishes.
