Meet Mariachi Fuego Band from Toronto!

Do you know what Fuego means in Spanish? Fire! Mariachi is the traditional Mexican music. Mariachi music celebrates the joys and struggles of ordinary people and is usually played at important events and holidays. You might have heard some well-known songs such as “Cielito Lindo”, “Guantanamera or “La Bamba”. The Mariachi musical instruments include brass instruments like trumpets, violins, various guitars such as guitarron (large guitar) and a special vihuela (round-backed guitar). The term Mariachi is used to call both an individual performer and the music genre itself.

Celebrating Jewish New Year

From Sunday September 25th till Tuesday September 27th the Jewish people all over the world are celebrating Rosh Hashanah, also known as the Jewish New Year. One of the attributes of this holiday is shofar, a Jewish ritual wind instrument, made from a horn. Its sounds are usually interpreted as a call to repentance. According to an ancient tradition, when celebrating Rosh Hashanah, people dip bread (challah) and apples in honey and wish each other a sweet new year. Today you can watch a few episodes dedicated to the Jewish music and cuisine. Dance, eat, drink and celebrate Rosh Hashanah, 5783 year.

Trip to Madagascar with Donne Roberts Band

Watch a new episode of the Sounds of Canada project dedicated to the music from Madagascar. Donne Roberts Band was founded by Afro-Canadian musician, singer and composer Donne Roberts who has a unique life story. He was born on Madagascar, raised in Moscow, Russia (back then Soviet Union) where his parents worked as diplomats, and for the last 25 years he has been living in Canada.He is a 2-time Juno Award winner and 4-time nominee. He writes and performs songs in a dozen languages, including Japanese, and he is a highly skilled professional guitar player. That is why we invited him to take part in the third season of the Sounds of Canada project with his own group, the Donne Roberts Band.

Magic Sounds of Korean Drums

A famous choreographer and drum player Mi Young Kim is one of the leading figures in the Korean-Canadian cultural world. She founded the Mi Young Kim Folk Dance Institute in Toronto in 1979. In 1987 the company was renamed to the Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada. In 2019, Mi Young Kim and her ensemble were featured in the film Korean Sounds of Canada done by ECG Productions. We invite you today to enjoy the magical sounds of Korean drums and see the beauty of traditional Korean dances.

Have you ever been or dreamed of going to Argentina?! Then you may know that this magnificent country is famous for its Tango! Today we would like to introduce you to the Argentinian Sounds of Canada episode where the famous Payadora band from Toronto is likely to surprise you with its Tango version that exudes technical virtuosity, playful spontaneity, and rhythmic vitality.

Payadora is a contemporary chamber music ensemble that performs Argentinian/Uruguayan tango and folk music and original compositions inspired by that tradition. Tango is a unique genre and as world known dancer Carlos Gavito said: “The secret of tango is in this moment of improvisation that happens between step and step. It is to make the impossible thing possible: to dance silence”.
