We’re Thrilled to Announce Our Win!
Our film “Yiddish Sounds of Canada” has just won the Best Music Film award at the Hollywood Discovery Awards 2024!
Here’s what our director, Olga Antimony, had to say about this incredible journey:
_”We began filming this project in 2015. I first learned about the story of Moisei Beregovsky, a Jewish ethnomusicologist who dedicated his life to preserving Jewish songs, from Professor Anna Shternshis of the University of Toronto. The film came together gradually, following the work of musical enthusiasts from different countries who gathered at Anna’s home and step by step restored the lyrics that were once written in ghettos, in evacuation, and in partisan units.”_
This film is about more than music — it’s about resilience, identity, and the power of cultural memory. Beregovsky’s archive, long thought lost, became a testament to the endurance of Jewish culture even in the face of persecution. Rediscovered in Kyiv, it felt as though the lost voices of the past had once again found their way to be heard.
*Yiddish Sounds of Canada* tells the story of an indomitable people, the transformative power of music, and the importance of remembering our roots. It’s a journey of hope, survival, and finding one’s place in a complex, ever-changing world.
Thank you to everyone who supported us on this journey!
