It was the end of September 2017. A hot, summery autumn day. We decided to record a few pieces performed by Yulian Milkis and Sasha Sevastian, including Gia Kancheli’s “Music for Theatre and Cinema.” Gia later said that no one had filmed his music so beautifully before. Sasha brought several shirts and pants. Yulik did too. We spent the whole day driving around Toronto until the sun started to set. We wanted to record one piece at sunset but didn’t make it. We decided to do it another time. In Scarborough, we were fined $300 — the police arrived at the filming location, waited until we finished, and then politely informed me that I was fined for filming without municipal permission. But the footage remained. We never got around to editing it until the shocking news of Sasha’s death came during a tour in Mexico on February 14, 2018. He was only 42. And today, on October 2nd, he would have turned 48… How wonderful that he remains so alive in that recording! As if death doesn’t exist in this world…
