These dolls were lovingly created for our project “Mama Canada” by the brilliant Ukrainian puppet master Yevhen Nevynskyi, affectionately known as ‘Genius Antonovych’ by his colleagues and students. They seem so alive because Yevhen put his heart and soul into them. But now, the Master is no longer with us…
For nearly a year, we held onto the hope that Yevhen would be found — perhaps in a hospital or captivity, but alive… Tragically, genetic testing confirmed the heartbreaking news that Yevhen Nevynskyi lost his life in the war.
Yevhen was a gifted actor, a leading master of the stage at the Kyiv Puppet Theater, a talented designer, and an inspiring teacher who guided students in the art of creating theatrical puppets. From the first days of the full-scale invasion, he volunteered to defend Ukraine. On July 27, 2023, he went missing in the Zaporizhzhia direction. We clung to hope, but sadly, the worst was confirmed. Yevhen Nevynskyi was taken by the war…
His legacy lives on through his art and the countless lives he touched. Rest in peace, dear Yevhen.
